The City of Manaus, Brazil

The Manaus Fund is named after the interesting Brazilian city of Manaus, which in the local language means "Mother of God." With a population of 2 million it is situated in the rain forest on the northern shore of the Rio Negro River, 11 miles northwest of its confluence with the Amazon River.

Where the two rivers meet, they run side-by-side, retaining their individual characters for several miles; the dark water of the Rio Negro—its ultimate source in Columbia and its color due to high tannin content—appearing in stark contrast to the sediment-laden Amazon. A few miles east of their confluence, the rivers mingle and continue their sandy trip to the Atlantic, some 1000 miles away.

We envision the unique relationship of these two rivers as symbolic of our goal to support both the financial and social health of the organizations with which we work.
